Meet Angela

Updated: Jun 23

Angela enjoyed an active lifestyle for many years, playing tennis, swimming, cycling and enjoying daily beach walks with her dogs. Angela was diagnosed with scleroderma and myositis earlier in life and at the age of 61, discovered she had developed lung involvement. Her lung condition deteriorated fairly slowly but in 2019 she experienced a rapid decline from bushfire smoke in the NSW area. Throughout Angela's treatment over the years, she has experienced major side effects from different medications with modest impact on her scleroderma.

Angela was referred to The CPM by Dr Chandi Perera, her Rheumatologist at The Canberra Hospital for personalised assessment. The CPM is currently studying these variants in a bespoke mouse model in the hope of successfully identify the mechanisms causing her disease. The goal is to treat Angela without the pain and suffering of unnecessary side effects from non-specific medications.

"Having been introduced to Dr Simon Jiang I entered into the personalised medicine area with great enthusiasm. I realise it’s new ground but it seems such a logical approach to solving problems. I have found this exercise both interesting and fulfilling and if it does not lead to an answer for me then it could develop an answer for my family or maybe someone else in the world." - Angela
